'The People's Platform' takes on the digital age of exploitation - Los Angeles Times
Apparently it’s a mistake to think I can continue to make a living as a freelance writer in the digital era! My views aren’t *that* dark, but this book I reviewed is pretty bleak. It made me seriously consider disclosing to readers how much I’m paid for each article I publish so that we can all support the outlets that compensate writers fairly.
The Huge Mistake Pie - The Hairpin
This pie has been sitting in my notebook with just the “still wearing bra” slice filled in, but nothing else, for months and months. I finally completed it.
The Confidence Pie - The Hairpin
Here’s last week’s pie, which wasn’t up yet when I sent last Friday’s newsletter.
Journalism’s hiring transparency problem - Columbia Journalism Review
A real pet peeve. Make your job listings public, people!
I <3 Sotomayor. The annoying necessity of lists of women. Obama’s flip-flop on net neutrality. Africa’s tech edge, Germany’s coal addiction, and San Francisco’s stages of grief. Uber maps tell you where rich millennials live. Hey, did you know rich white people are doing illegal drugs like it’s no big deal? Lol. How your office squanders your time. Choire Sicha’s delightful takedown of Arianna Huffington. Is it a new golden age for media? Ellen Willis on doing intellectual work in lean times. Teach for America is growing as teachers are losing their jobs. Nerding out with Thomas Piketty. Jon Krakauer on the sherpas who died on Everest. Transitioning to civilian life, and dying on a VA wait list. Falling out of touch with a former best friend. A mattress startup. Polyamory and stick-on nipples. Is it racist to refuse to date outside your race? Vegetarian cooking for carnivores. The demographics of poetry. Behind the scenes with Beyoncé. Hating on Coachella is so passé.
Austin Kleon’s SXSW keynote, which is about creativity and why being part of a scene is better than being a lone genius. At the very end, it includes a shoutout to this very newsletter. #meta
EMOJIGIFS = center of my personal venn diagram.
The Essential Ellen Willis, an anthology of cultural criticism and feminist essays from an incredible writer and thinker. I contributed one of the the chapter intros! Watch the book trailer and order a copy.

“On a new level: spent 30 mins telepathically willing @annfriedman to send her newsletter before noon. It worked.” -Brittany Wilmes, last week. Did you spend 30 minutes this morning telepathically willing my hangover to go away? If that was you, thanks! I feel much better now.
"actually I meant to tell you --I appreciate the tip to follow Ann Friedman- I've really enjoyed her diverse readings. xoxoxoxoxmama" - Lila Battis's mom. Really making inroads with the mom demographic!
“it's Friday and I need you(r newsletter) to make it through” -Alexandra Svokos. This testimonial sounds like a power-ballad lyric so obviously I loved it.
Plus another tacit endorsement of my pie charts, this week from from the folks at Ford.
