THE CAVLETTER 015: Dredd, Doctor Who, Flying Saucers, Norse Gods and Goths!

I write to you from the Deadline Cave where I'm trying my hardest not to be distracted by the election madness that is sweeping across Britain at the moment. I usually try to stay up as late as humanly possibly on Election Night, but as we seem to be having an election or referendum every year at the moment, I might skip it tomorrow. I will definitely be voting though, and urge all my British subscribers to do the same, whatever party you support.

OK, enough of the politics and on with the CONTENTS...
  • He is the Law!
  • The Ninth Doctor meets monsters, mermaids and the Brigadier
  • Stuff I've been enjoying

Grud on a Greenie! I can exclusively reveal one of the projects I'm working on at the moment.

JUDGE DREDD: ALTERNATIVE FACTS is a brand new novella set during Dredd's second year on the skeds of Mega-City One. It's coming out in October as an ebook, as well as part of the JUDGE DREDD YEAR TWO OMNIBUS alongside two of my favourite Dredd authors, Michael Carroll and Matt Smith.

Here's the cover:
I'm over Luna-1 to be back writing Dredd for a fourth time, after the Big Finish audio I scripted back in 2004 and my short stories in the MEGAZINE

I can't reveal too much at the moment, other than it features an early encounter between Dredd and a PSI-Judge. No, not Anderson, as she isn't even born by this point in Dredd's life.

More drokking details soon...

The third volume of the Ninth Doctor's collected comic adventures is released today, gathering issues 6-10 of Titan's DOCTOR WHO: NINTH DOCTOR with scripts by me and art by Adriana Melo, Cris Bolson and Marco Lesko.

Featuring the stories, OFFICIAL SECRETS and SLAVER'S SONG, the collection features Doctor Number Nine, Rose Tyler, Captain Jack, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Benton, giant monsters, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, colonial Brazil, mermaids, glory-hunters, slaves and spaceships.

Here's the cover and sample pages can be found here...

Greg Wah asked on twitter if that was Doctor Who or Dr. Manhattan? Now that's a crossover I'd like to see!

Oh, and if you have any questions about the NINTH DOCTOR COMIC why not ask them by replying to this very email and I'll answer them in next week's Cavletter. Questions about the stories, behind the scenes info, continuity stuff... anything at all!

- I've let my comic reading fall behind while I'm juggling multiple projects, but wanted to give a shout out to my buddy Paul Cornell's SAUCER STATE which is out now from IDW, and is full of Fortean wonder. It also feels very timely at the moment. Check it out.

- Novel wise, I recently read COGHEART by Peter Bunzl, which is a stonking steampunk adventure for younger readers, but with real peril and much bloodier than I'd expected. I'll definitely be reading the sequel, MOONLOCKET.

- I'm now reading Neil Gaiman's NORSE MYTHOLOGY, which I'm very much enjoying. I've always been a sucker for the stories of Odin, Loki and the denizens of Asgard, and Neil's retelling is both exciting and very funny (I love his version of Thor!)

Plus, while I'm on a Gaiman trip, I've also been ADORING AMERICAN GODS starring Lovejoy as Mr Wednesday. So good. Episode four has rocketed into my top five TV episodes of all time!

- I think it was OPTIMUS PRIME writer John Barber that recommended GOTHS, the latest album by THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, on twitter, and I've been listening to it non-stop ever since. In fact, I'm listening to it right now, from it's brooding, dramatic opener, to the smooth, silky soul of the later tracks. Why not give it a go. The lyrics are incredible.

That's all for this week. It's now back to writing Dredd, as well as putting the finishing touches to a new BBC Book I've been working on with George Mann and Justin Richards. Earlier this week I submitted the first two scripts to a new comic book I'm writing and started work on a pitch for a children's book series.

Until next time, come and see me on twitter and Facebook, and feel free to forward this to a friend (or even an enemy) if you think they'll enjoy it. They can subscribe here!

And don't forget that all subscribers will be entered into a prize draw to win a signed copy of THE PATCHWORK DEVIL next week!

Stay safe,
