Five Song Fridays: Chip Hop

CHIP HOP

This week's mixtape is put together by Eric Steuer of Not the 1s. Their new record just came out last month, and it features Kool Keith and Riff Raff. I was a Kickstarter backer for the album, and one of the perks I got was to be a drawing on the picture disc they made for the vinyl. (Somehow they knew to put me in a Bad Religion shirt, too!)

Eric is also a great writer, whose work you may have seen in WIRED. The mixtape and the theme are from him, so I'll let him take it from here:

“Our new song Soda Popinski is a tribute to the mighty old school video game Punch Out. I built this playlist around it, with other rap tracks that sample video games.”

Listen to the playlist on Spotify or YouTube.

Not the 1s - Soda Popinski
“Did you know the Russian boxer in 'Punch Out' was originally known as Vodka Drunkenski?”

Percee P feat. Diamond D - 2 Brothers From the Gutter
“It's that Konami funk y'all. Two legends kill it over the 'Contra' intro music. Madlib produced this one and really nailed it.”

Gucci Mane feat. 2 Chainz - Get It Back
“I wonder who is better at Tetris — Gucci Mane or 2 Chainz? I just feel like it would be Gucci for some reason.”

People Under the Stairs - Gamin On Ya
“I love PUTS because they always come with fun shit like this track that samples the 'Galaga' theme. In fact, they are so fun they named the album that this is from FUN DMC.”

Statik Selektah feat. Big Shug - Punch Out!
“Here's a more direct rap interpretation of 'Punch Out' than the one we did. Shug delivers nothin but fighting words over Statik's sick rework of the game's theme music. What's not to love?”
